Rights of workers with diabetes

New York workers who suffer from diabetes are likely to need to take a bit of time each day, sometimes multiple times a day, to check on and maintain their sugar level. This can potentially mean that they need their employer to make accommodations so that they are able to take care of their condition. In many cases, employers will have no problems allowing people a few minutes here and there to address these issues.

EEOC kicks off Hollywood gender discrimination probe

New York entertainment fans may be interested to learn that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission officially began its investigation into discrimination against female TV and film directors in Los Angeles on Oct. 14. Investigators kicked off their query by interviewing film director Maria Giese about the employment issues female directors face in Hollywood.

Sexual orientation protection under discrimination law

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects workers from being discriminated against based on their color, national origin, race, religion or sex. Since Title VII does not list sexual orientation, federal courts have rejected such discrimination claims. The LGBT community in New York is likely thrilled to learn that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has decided that sexual orientation discrimination is innately sex discrimination and, therefore, is covered under Title VII.

Time Warner changes parental leave policy after lawsuit

A lawsuit that was filed against Time Warner Inc. over a discriminatory parental leave policy. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the New York-based company on behalf of a former employee of one of its divisions who claimed that he and other biological fathers were not allowed to take as much parental leave as biological mothers and adoptive parents.
